Bungie’s Latest Blockbuster has Shipped around 8 Million Copies in its 1st 24 Hours on Sale, Becoming the Biggest New IP Launch Ever. The Reviews Might Not be Out Yet but, "Destiny" has already Become a Massive Hit for Bungie and is Well on its Way to Becoming Publisher Activision’s Latest Billion Dollar Franchise. You’ll Notice there’s No Actual Sales Figures here though, or any Indication of How it’s Done Compared to Other Games – such as Activision’s Own Call Of Duty or the 4 Million Copies of Watch Dogs’ in 1st Week.
The Figure is also Only the Revenue Made from Selling the Game to Retailers and Putting it Aside for Hardware Bundles and is Absolutely Not the Amount Made When Selling to Customers. Although there’s Little Chance that, the 1st Shipment Won’t Sell Out in Pretty Quick Order. If the $500 Million (£310 Million) Figure is Worldwide and if you Assume an Average Price of $60, you’re Talking Somewhere around 8 Million Copies Shipped on Day 1. Although that Could Easily be Out by a Million or More depending on How Many of the More Expensive Collector’s Editions and Expansion Passes are included in the Figure.
Either Way that’s an Awful Lot for the 1st 24 Hours and Seems to Confirm Activision’s Previous Claim that, the Game is the Most Pre-Ordered New IP Ever. The Only Official Figure though, is that, there were 11,000 Midnight Openings in Shops Around the World and that, the Game is Now Being Played in over 178 Different Countries. Although Bungie has Often Denied it "Destiny" is Believed to Have Cost $500 Million to Make and Market, Making it the Most Expensive VideoGame Ever Made. Although it’s Clearly already Well on its Way to Making its Money Back (Activision and Bungie will Only Get a Percentage of the Revenues and the $500 Million Figure is Only Sold to Retailers Anyway).
"Since the beginning, we’ve been confident that our investment and belief in Destiny would pay off. But not many people believed we’d be able to say it did so on day one", Said Activision CEO, Eric Hirshberg. "Destiny is officially the biggest new franchise launch in our industry’s history. It’s also the highest-selling day one digital console release in history. We have more confidence than ever that Destiny will become one of the iconic franchises of this generation and Activision’s next billion dollar brand. Most importantly, it’s just a great game which we can’t stop playing. A big thanks to our incredibly talented team and partners who helped make this happen; most importantly, our partners at Bungie."
