VIDEO: Intel Turns San Jose into a City of Smart Things

Last Year, the White House Launched the SmartAmerica Challenge in an Effort to Show How the Internet of Things could Benefit American Society, Not Only by Creating New Jobs but also, by Using Technology to Develop New Business Opportunities. Intel Stepped Up to the Challenge by Creating America’s 1st Smart City, San Jose, which Uses the Internet of Things to Monitor the City’s Vital Statistics on Traffic, Transportation and Air Quality. Intel’s Smart City is the 1st of its Kind in the U.S. and in Order for it to Work, Intel Installed Sensors All across San Jose. These Sensors Measure Air and Water Pollution, Noise, Traffic Flow, Energy Usage, Communication and Public Transportation Frequency. This Data is then Shared with City Government Officials via Mobile Apps, to Help Improve What’s being Regularly Monitored.


Overall, the Idea is to Help Cities Better Use their Resources, The Smart City Approach Isn't just Good for the City’s Infrastructure: It also has Socioeconomic Benefits, including the Creation of 25,000 New Tech-Related Jobs. Someone has to Manage All that Data, right ? The Internet of Things Resides in the Cloud so, Security is of Utmost Importance to Intel. They’re Using Existing Technology to Harden their Servers and Gateways to Make Sure that, the Data Doesn't Fall into the Wrong Hands.


As More Cities Become Smarter, this Sort of Security will be Paramount for the Program’s Success. The SmartAmerica Program Isn't just about Making Cities Smarter, though. It’s also Looking at Learning How the Internet of Things Can Improve Energy, Security, Manufacturing, Climate, Home Building, Healthcare, Energy, Transportation and Even Disaster Recovery. Thanks to Advancements in Technology, the Internet of Things, Where Everything is Connected, is Officially Arriving. SmartAmerica Hopes to Take Advantage of these Connections to the Fullest.
