Tesla is Giving Out its Electric Car Technology for Free

The Murmurs that Tesla would Open Source its Technology were True. In a Blog Post Titled, "All Our Patent Are Belong To You", Tesla CEO and All-Around Futuristic Guy, Elon Musk, Said the Electric Vehicle Company Won't Sue you to Kingdom Come if you Use its Technology "in good faith".  That's Right, Musk is Basically Handing Out the Technology that Powers its Futuristic Model S Electric Car to Anyone (including its Competitors) — for Free. Why on Earth would Tesla do this ? To "accelerate the advent of sustainable transport", Writes Musk. Yes, this is Crusade for the Greater Good of Society instead of the Greater Good of just One Small Company. Fabulous as Electric Cars and that Model S with the 17-Inch Touchscreen is, EVs represent Less than 1% of Total Vehicles Sold, Says Musk. Where he Once Believed Larger Car Companies would Steal its Innovations and Use "massive manufacturing, sales and marketing power to overwhelm Tesla", he Now Realizes that, in Order for EVs to Address the Carbon Crisis, there Needs to be a Lot More EVs instead of Gasoline Cars.

By itself, Tesla is Too Small to Build Enough EVs for Everyone to Buy. However, with Help from Other Carmakers Churning Out EVs at Greater Scale Based on its Technology, Convincing More People to Get EVs will be a More Feasible Goal. "If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles but, then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal", Musk Said on Tesla's Blog. "Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology." The Ultimate Goal of Open Sourcing its Patented Technologies is to Get More EVs on the Road. Now that Automakers Don't Need to do as Much R&D on EVs (since Tesla's already Done Most of it) it's Possible we'll See More EVs Produced and Purchased. At least that's What Musk is Hoping for.
